The Woodshop at Boys Republic introduces students to the fundamentals of residential construction through a structured, hands-on approach. Students begin with small-scale projects and gradually advance to more complex tasks that mirror real-world job site expectations.
Core Learning Objectives:
- Introduction to Basic Tools:
- Students start with simple projects that familiarize them with hand and power tools, safety protocols, and fundamental construction techniques.
- Progressive Skill Development:
- As students advance, they learn essential job-site skills including:
- Measuring and marking layout lines
- Precision cutting
- Framing walls
- Drywall installation
- Capstone Project – Wall Framing:
- By the end of the course, students can successfully frame and drywall a wall, demonstrating their readiness for entry-level construction work.
Advanced Projects for Skilled Students:
- Trophy Boxes:
- Built by students who show advanced craftsmanship
- Constructed from solid red oak
- Produced annually—approximately 100 boxes per year
- Involves detailed joinery and finishing work
- Students earn extra credit for participating
