The Student Bakery program at Boys Republic allows students to master the art and science of baking while directly contributing to campus meal services and community-based food needs. Since its launch in February 2014, the program has grown rapidly in popularity and scale.

Program Overview

  • Hands-On Experience in Daily Meal Production:
    Students are responsible for producing baked goods used in:
    • Breakfast, lunch, and dinner services across the main campus
    • Daily fresh breads, pastries, and desserts that support the school’s overall culinary operations
  • Growing Demand and Program Expansion:
    Due to high interest and local community support:
    • The program has expanded to accommodate more students
    • The bakery now serves both public and private events
    • It fulfills commercial orders, including desserts supplied to Pavilions grocery stores
    • Marketing/Entrepreneurial experience gained through participation on local Farmers Market

Baking Skills & Product Creation

  • Artisan and Classic Baked Goods:
    Students learn to make a wide variety of professional-quality products, such as:
    • Artisan breads (sourdough, baguettes, focaccia)
    • Laminated doughs for croissants and danishes
    • Signature desserts include crème brûlée, blueberry cheesecake, and red velvet cupcakes
  • Focus on Technique and Precision:
    The curriculum emphasizes both traditional and modern baking practices:
    • Understanding baking science and ingredient behavior
    • Practicing small-batch techniques (e.g., whipping meringue by hand)
    • Balancing precision and creativity in presentation and flavor

    • Planetary mixers for versatile mixing tasks
    • Spiral mixers for high-hydration doughs
    • Artisan deck ovens for even baking and perfect crust development
