72 Plymouth Scamp Project

72 Plymouth Scamp Project

Boys Republic’s Metal Shop is currently working on a project that will give students valuable hands-on experience in automotive restoration and metal fabrication. Students are restoring a donated 1972 Plymouth Scamp, a classic vehicle that serves as a collaborative learning project between the Metal Shop and Auto Shop programs. A wall in a neighboring, unused classroom was removed by students and staff to accommodate the programs' collaboration.

The Plymouth Scamp was previously owned by a friend of Metal Shop instructor Mr. Crowell and has spent much of its life on the East Coast. While the vehicle is not currently running, it retains all its major components. It presents an ideal opportunity for students to develop practical skills in restoration, welding, fabrication, and automotive repair. Years of exposure to harsh weather conditions have left the vehicle with significant metalwork needs, creating a real-world learning experience for students in the welding class. At the same time, students in the Auto Shop will have the opportunity to diagnose, repair, and eventually help return the vehicle to operating condition.

Students will gain experience measuring, cutting, shaping, welding, and replacing damaged metal components while learning the importance of precision, safety, and craftsmanship. The project will also introduce students to problem-solving situations commonly encountered in the automotive and fabrication industries. By working on an actual vehicle rather than a classroom exercise, students will see firsthand how technical skills can be applied to real-world challenges.

The restoration project reflects the mission of Boys Republic vocational training programs: providing meaningful, hands-on learning experiences that prepare young people for future careers and lifelong success. Through projects like this, students develop industry-relevant skills, build confidence in their abilities, and learn the value of teamwork, responsibility, and perseverance. Whether they pursue careers in welding, automotive technology, manufacturing, or other skilled trades, students gain practical experience that strengthens both their resumes and their belief in what they can accomplish.

The donated Plymouth Scamp represents another opportunity for Boys Republic students to transform raw potential into achievement—both in the shop and in their futures.
